The COVID-19 is a new coronavirus infected disease in humans, which was outbreak in Wuhan, causing more than 80,000 people infection in China.

The SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19

The current epidemic situation is still severe. It is very important for solid organ transplant recipients to prevent COVID-19 infection and take treatment after infection. Therefore, we invited the well-known experts in kidney transplantation to conduct a successful remote academic conference on kidney transplantation under COVID-19 outbreak. More than 100 participants took part in the online interactions.

Professor Zhang Xiaodong was the Chairman of this meeting. At the beginning of the meeting, he welcomed all participants through the camera and the Internet, then he introduced the speakers.

The video meeting

As the first speaker, Professor Zhang Weijie from Wuhan Tongji Hospital shared the current epidemiological studies of COVID-19 and the achievements in diagnosis and treatment.

The second speaker Professor Wu Xiongfei from Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University shared his experiments in the medical treatment of kidney transplant recipients with COVID-19 infection. He proposed that immunosuppressants may increase the chance of infection, but also suppress the “infection storm”, that cause the major risk of patient death. He also talked about the glucocorticoid during the pneumonia.

Then, Professor Zhao Yong from Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences shared basic research about COVID-19. First, he introduced the progress of vaccine development, then he analyzed the immune response of transplant recipients exposed to 2019-nCoV.

A pharmacist Dr. Yang Hui from Beijing Chaoyang Hospital informed research progress in anti SARS-CoV-2 drugs and the currently registered RCT studies.

Finally, the chairman summarized the meeting and made the following points:

COVID-19 is a new coronavirus infected disease in humans, which brings us great challenges situation in China, even the whole world. The key point is how to turn this challenge into an opportunity, in order to reduce the damage to humanity and accumulate experience from it to better meet new challenges in the future (inevitable from the history of human development). To defend against disease emergencies that may occur frequently in a quite certain time.

The characteristic of COVID-19 is the extremely contagious, forcing us to change our existing concepts of prevention and treatment alternated by improving our defense ability against diseases.

Generally, the organ transplant recipients are usually susceptible to infectious diseases. Therefore, the transplant recipients should be much more careful to take protective measures under this COVID-19 outbreak situation, otherwise they must face serious consequences of life threaten or organs loss.

In the diagnosis and treatment of these patients, both the treatment principles of transplant recipient with infectious diseases and COVID-19 guidelines should be well followed.

A major question is whether immunosuppression needs to be adjusted after COVID-19 infection? Does the dose of glucocorticoid need to be changed? These could be solved by the accumulate of more cases. The diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19 is complicated and widely influenced, and the current research is still in the early beginning. However, the research should have to progress rapidly though the modern research, mega data analysis and the hardworking people.
